Today, one of the basic, yet often forgotten legal phrases:

to file a lawsuit ... in a court

a lawsuit is a document that you submit in a court of law.

we can say:

to file a lawsuit in a district court,

or

the claimant has filed a lawsuit in the county court

The synonym phrases are:

to file a claim in a court of law

or

to bring an action in a court of law

All the above phrases mean the same: to start legal proceedings in a court of law (a lawsuit or a claim or an action are words which mean a document submitted in a court or a problem, dispute taken to a court to have a judge decide it)

An informal way of saying to file a lawsuit against someone is: to sue somenone
